Canadian HR and office managers usually want one gift that feels thoughtful, ships on time and stays under their tax planning limit. Branded drinkware, winter wear and maple treats fit that brief without looking like a giveaway pen.

Employee gifts vs client gifts

Employee gifts work best when they’re useful and wearable, like toques, blankets, drinkware or a winter kit. Branding can be bold, because staff wear it with pride.

Client gifts usually call for a more premium feel, like a gift set, maple or an executive pen. Many clients prefer a subtle logo, such as a debossed or tone-on-tone mark.

Are employee gifts taxable in Canada?

Short answer: Under the CRA’s administrative policy, you can give an arm’s length employee non-cash gifts and awards worth a combined $500 or less (including taxes) per year without a taxable benefit. The gift must be for a special occasion, such as a holiday, birthday, wedding or the birth of a child, or a recognition award for overall contributions to the workplace. It can’t be a reward tied to job performance. If the total goes over $500, only the amount over $500 is taxable. Cash and near-cash gifts are always a taxable benefit.

Small items of trivial value, such as coffee or tea, T-shirts, mugs, plaques and trophies, don’t count toward the $500 limit. The CRA says to use fair market value, and to include items whose value may have been changed by a logo or engraving. Long-service awards have their own separate $500 limit (details in the FAQ below).

Corporate gifts FAQ

What are the best corporate gifts in Canada?

The most popular choices are items people use every day: blankets, toques, scarves and gloves, mugs, gift sets and Canadian treats like maple. For a distinctly Canadian touch, hockey pucks and mini sticks are hard to beat.

What is the minimum order for corporate gifts?

Minimums vary by item and decoration method. The minimum for the gift you choose is confirmed on your quote.

How much should I spend per corporate gift?

That depends on your audience and goals. Share your budget per person, and your rep will suggest options that fit it. Pricing is confirmed on your quote.

When should I order corporate holiday gifts?

Share your in-hands date when you request a quote. Embroidered gifts often need more lead time than printed or engraved items, and your timeline is confirmed on your quote.

Do you offer Made in Canada corporate gifts?

Yes. Our Made in Canada collection includes items such as hockey pucks, mini sticks and yard bags. For other products, the country of origin is confirmed on your quote.

Will I see a proof before production?

Yes. Every order includes a free proof, and nothing is produced until you approve it.

Can you ship gifts across Canada?

Yes, we deliver across Canada. Include your delivery province, or a list of addresses, in your quote request so shipping is planned with production.

How fast will someone get back to me?

A real CanPromos rep replies within 4 hours on business days. You’ll hear back from a person who knows your order.

What are the best employee Christmas gifts in Canada?

Useful gifts win: custom toques, blankets, mugs, tumblers, gift sets and maple. Share your team size and budget per person and your rep will shortlist options. Pricing and timing are confirmed on your quote.

Can you help with last-minute corporate holiday gifts?

Yes, on select items. See our Rush Service collection (24-48 Hour Rush on Select Items). Whether rush applies to your logo, quantity and product is confirmed on your quote. Regular orders still include a free proof.

Are gift cards taxable for employees in Canada?

The CRA treats a gift card as non-cash only if all of these apply: it can only be used at a single retailer or a group of retailers named on the card, its terms say it can’t be converted to cash, and you keep a log of the employee’s name, the date, the reason, the type of card, the amount and the retailer. Otherwise it’s near-cash and taxable. See the CRA page and check with your accountant.

How do long-service awards work?

A non-cash long-service award isn’t taxable if it recognizes 5 or more years of service, at least 5 years have passed since the employee’s last long-service award, and it’s worth $500 or less (including taxes). This limit is separate from the yearly $500 limit for gifts and awards, and unused room in one can’t be moved to the other.

What happens if gifts go over $500 in a year?

Only the amount over $500 is a taxable benefit. The CRA’s example: $650 of gifts and awards means a $150 taxable benefit.

Do branded mugs or T-shirts count toward the $500 limit?

The CRA lists mugs and T-shirts with employer logos as examples of small or trivial items that don’t count toward the $500 limit. For anything else, ask your accountant how to value it.
